Comfort Foods

Oh Monday, busy Monday! Started the day off with a green monster before the day o' meetings. I discovered the green monster on message boards which pointed me to the site http://www.greenmonstermovement.com/ which has some great ideas. I tried spinach, banana, peaches, and almond milk.

Managed to squeek out a lunch break and experienced reason #541 I love where I work. The salad bar at work - check out this glorious concoction. It tasted like fall mostly due to the salmon and roasted squash. Which then turned into this...
And led for a very very full me for the rest of my meetings. Sadly I ended up working too late to make it to the cardio circuit so I made up my own cardio circuit routine using a balance ball, bosu ball, resistance bands - resulting in lots of sweat. Feels so good!

Then came home to an easy dinner of BLTs and corn soup - I'd love to take credit for it but it was V-8 Southwestern Corn Soup. There is just something comforting about soup and a sandwich, specifically a BLT, such a classicNow back to watching House.

Baking, Football, and an Attempt at Running

So I think I used my 'extra hour' from daylight savings time well today. Woke up way to early given what time I went to bed.

Breakfast out with The Husband (wish I took a picture), fried egg, Portugese sausage, home fries, a slice of toast, and some black coffee. Then off to grocery shopping for the week. It was a cheap trip this week thanks to a well planned week of meals.

A quick stop at Starbucks and then back home for a day of football! Something I have learned about football - it is easy to make bread during a game. About 15 minutes before kick off I got started. Its a very basic recipe:

Disolve 1 package of dry active yeast in 1 and 1/8 c. warm water with 1 T brown sugar.
Wait for about 5 minutes for yeast to foam then add in 1.5c whole wheat flour, 1.5c. bread flour, 1 tsp salt (I used Kosher), and 1 T olive oil.
Stir together into a scraggy doughy mess, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and nead for about 10 minutes.
The place in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with saran wrap.
Let it rise for about 45 minutes, then punch it (good for getting some aggression out at a bad play). Let it rise again till about half time (30-45 minutes). Form into a loaf and place in a lightly oiled loaf pan, cover again and let rise for about another quarter (30-45 minutes depending on which game you watch). Then bake at 400 degrees for the last quarter (30 minutes or so). And violia! Whole wheat bread. And another W for my team.

After the game I also tried running outside. Now a little background on me running. I was a runner - in the sense that I did cross country and track in High School but never just for fun. And I am very comfortable with the elliptical, treadmill, and other indoor methods of a cardio workout. But outdoor running...

Well several months ago I cheer on a friend who was running her first half marathon and afterward thought, I should go for a run. So I started with a little goal - run to a sign for the next suburb, about a mile away.

I was happy and rocking. Then I got to the point where I knew I should have passed the sign, but I was enjoying myself, then enjoyment turned to aggravation at the lack of a sign, which then turned to boredom, and then to 'how far away from home am I?' So eventually I turned around and went home tired, irritated, out of breath, and thirsty.

Today's attempt I tried applying some lessons I learned.
Plan a route
Make it a loop
Bring water
Have a good playlist

I planned a 2 mile loop around my neighborhood, including hills and what I found later to be some good views. It felt good, I was slow but thats ok. I also got lost - even though I mapped my route. I thought I made a wrong turn so I went further and down into a new development. I also ended up taking a couple walking breaks.

All in all it was 2.4 miles that I didn't hate it. Will try a new route in a couple days but tomorrow is a busy day at work and I already have a cardio circuit class planned for the evening.

I also made Shrimp Creole tonight a slight improvisation from my Mom's recipe, with some brown rice - will post the recipe and pictures tomorrow.

Learning to Blog and Bottle Wine

So I've been marinating on the idea of starting a blog for a little while now. I've been inspired by blogs I have been reading and I won't lie a little bit of the idea came from a recent article in a magazine about some ladies who blog. After reading their responses to the article and continuing to read their blogs I thought it was time to get my own voice out in the interwebs.

About two years ago I hit the point where I was overweight, unhappy and ready to make a change. Since then I have worked on reaching a healthy weight and I have been searching for ways to keep myself accountable and getting not just smaller but maintaining a happy, healthy, and fit me. So here's to the start!

In other adventures The Husband and I went to a local winery today and participated in their bottle your own wine event. The most challenging part of the event was deciding what our wine labels would say.

We settled on:
"Old wine and old friends are enough provision." - An Andalusian Saying on the whites
"Take the drink for the thirst that is yet to come." - An Irish Proverb and on the reds

We filled the wine bottles straight from the barrels, corked, sealed, and labeled them. I think this is the earliest we have ever done Christmas shopping.
